Powerlink | CopperString
Powerlink is a leading Australian provider of high voltage electricity transmission network services, providing electricity to more than five million Queenslanders and 253,000 businesses.
Our network extends 1,700 kilometres (km) from Cairns to the New South Wales border and comprises 15,345 circuit km of transmission lines and 147 substations.
CopperString 2032, led by Powerlink, involves building 840km of new electricity transmission line from near Townsville to Mount Isa that will connect Queensland’s North West Minerals Province (NWMP) to the National Electricity Market for the first time in Australia’s history. Approximately 200km of additional transmission line will be required to connect new renewable generators to CopperString.
CopperString will unlock $500 billion of critical minerals and unleash 22GW of renewable energy along the corridor. It will create more than 800 direct construction jobs (up to 2029) and thousands more.
About CopperString 2032
The project has a budget of $5 billion and includes:
- 500 kV transmission line from just south of Townsville to Hughenden
- 330 kV transmission line from Hughenden to Cloncurry
- 220 kV transmission line from Cloncurry to Mount Isa
- Five new substations
- Up to six workforce accommodation sites along the corridor.
CopperString will break ground mid-2024 and is expected to be completed by 2029.
